Wilson Creek / Davis Bay / Selma Park

Wilson Creek

South of Sechelt and just north of Roberts Creek is Wilson Creek. This community was named after James Wilson, a blacksmith employed by the Burns and Jackson's Brothers Logging Camp in 1898.  Wilson Creek contains a large rural and residential area surrounding a node of commercial/industrial development.  These include Wilson Creek Plaza, two automotive dealerships at the intersection of Field Road and Highway 101, the regional airport, and a sawmill operation at the top of Field Road.  While Wilson Creek may not stand out as a pretty face, there are hidden depths worth seeking at this unassuming little crossroads.

There are many Important fish habitat rivers along the coast, and the Chapman Creek Fish Hatchery will demonstrate how to separate your Pinks from your Cohoes. Reached by turning north at Wilson Creek on Field Road, this community-owned facility has been here for nearly 30 years thanks to its dedicated volunteers. Riverside platforms provide good views of Chapman Creek and there is a trail leading upstream.
From the water the only visible area of note to boaters is Port Stalashen, a local condominium and marina complex. The marina is small and private, and its size was limited out of a commitment to preserve the rare marsh estuary of the area which is home to a diverse range of birds and waterfowl.  So keep an eye out as you pass by. Eagles and herons are common here.

Dakota Ridge is an upcoming park gem in the development phase of its life.  It is accessed from the Sechelt Chapman Forest Service Road from Wilson Creek's Field Road.  The summer season attracts the mountain bike, off-road and hiking enthusiasts to the Dakota Ridge area. The winter season attracts the snowshoers and cross-country skiers because of the vast network of trails slicing through forests, leading out to open plateaus with magnificent views of the Sunshine Coast and the surrounding vistas and mountain ranges.  The Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Society is in the process of developing the park into a world class winter recreation destination. The initial phase will include improved logging road access, parking facilities, warming huts and washroom facilities.

Davis Bay

Davis Bay, less than 3km south of Sechelt, is one of sandiest and most accessible beaches on the Sunshine Coast and is one of Sechelt's best playgrounds.  The sweeping views here across the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver Island are unbroken by any offshore islands, and are a rarity along the otherwise sheltered coastline. On a clear day, Vancouver Island is visible enough that the individual communities stand out.  And as beautiful as this can be during the day, nighttime is breathtaking with all the sparkling lights revealing the locations of the Island's cities and villages.
Davis Bay
bc accommodations
The most noticeable feature of Davis Bay is its long pebbled beach coastline bordered by a beautiful esplanade lined with viewing benches, a popular place for walking.  The beach is highlighted by the long wooden pier jutting out from the shoreline. The pier is often occupied by fisherman dropping their crab traps and fishing for salmon, as well as adventurous and enthusiastic swimmers jumping into the ocean!  Low tide's sandy beach is great for boarding/skimming, sandcastle-building, and kite-flying.  In the spring and fall the windsurfers and sail-boarders can be seen playing in the waters.
When the tide rolls out tidal pools and sand bars appear, presenting a good opportunity for observing some of the smaller marine life or the opportunity to build a sandcastle.  In summer, when the tide rises over the sun-baked beach, the ocean warms up as it absorbs all that solar energy and provides swimmers with a Mediterranean-like experience.

Chapman Creek is a popular local hiking and biking trail with a moderate grade.  It follows the creek and leads to a small waterfall and hatchery. The middle of the trail has a big hill so there is some uphill hiking and biking involved.  It also has some hidden creatures along the way that you can look for as you explore the area. In 1996 a local carver created some gnomes and trolls from the dead wood and stumps of the creek area. The art is hidden amongst the forest along the first half of the trail. How many can you spot?

Selma Park

Selma Park is the hill you will see climbing out of Davis Bay towards Sechelt. This is an area of private homes, Sechelt Indian Band Reserve Lands, and a working marine port with a deep-sea shipping conveyor for Construction Aggregates.  There is a small anchorage/marina in Selma Park which is operated by the Sechelt Band, and is usually full.

Before the Sunshine Coast Highway was established in the 1950's, steamboats such as the All Red Line's S.S. Selma provided the transportation needed to establish a settlement within the community. In 1917, the Union Steamship Company purchased the property and cabins in today's Selma Park. Today Selma Park exists as a quiet residential neighbourhood stretching along Highway 101.  The views from many of the homes in this area are among the best on the Sunshine Coast.
